Biography | Tim Hamilton has been associated with the design and maintenance of defence systems for 40 years. Mr. Hamilton joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1972 and served 20 years, during which time he gained a solid background in the maintenance of electrical supply and distribution systems, stabilized aircraft landing aids, propulsion control systems and condition monitoring systems. His technical expertise included surveys and assessing failure modes of machinery. As Chief Electrician, Mr. Hamilton completed an Associate Diploma in Naval Weapons Electronics and a Diploma of Electrical Engineering. He spent his last years in the Navy teaching Associate Diploma circuit theory, electronics, and applied electronics to Electrical Engineering Officers. Highlights included working with Defence Scientific Technology Organisation on an automated maritime damage monitoring system, and being in charge of the electric plant on a Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG). Mr. Hamilton left the Navy in 1992 and joined Scientific Management Associates P/L, a private Australian company that specializes in designing and implementing Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) solutions for Defence and commercial projects. Mr. Hamilton’s initial role was to manage the development and conduct of training on then state of the art electric plant, propulsion control/SCADA systems and condition monitoring solutions. With SMA, Mr. Hamilton has been involved in the following activities: Logistics Engineer (RAM, FMECA, LCC, spares optimisation etc) for: Portable Transponder Range and Mine-countermeasures Underwater Control System (L3 Nautronix, RAN and Canadian Defence Force), Mitcham-Frankston and Melbourne Citylink Freeway / tunnel projects, Seahawk Helicopter Upgrade program (Tenix Defence Systems, RAN), Super Sea-sprite helicopter program (Kaman Aerospace, RAN), Tactical Air Defence Radar System Project (Lockheed Martin, RAAF), Collins Class Submarine Combat System Upgrade (Raytheon, RAN), ANZAC Ship Project (Transfield Shipbuilding, RAN). Develop, conduct and/or manage training for: In-Service Support program management (Royal Malaysian Navy), LPA Ship Project (Forgacs, RAN), Maintenance and operation of the propulsion and platform systems on the ANZAC Class Frigates (Tenix Defence, RAN, RNZN), Procurement program implementation for Malaysian Defence Force. ILS Manager: Digital Hydrographical Database project (Vision Systems, Aust Hydrographical Office), Malaysian Patrol Frigate program as consultant ILS manager, working with Penang Shipbuilding, Blohm & Voss (Hamburg) and RMN, Army vehicle procurement program, Land 121 (Aust Army), Managed the installation of communications equipment to the Victoria Police vehicle fleet, Commercial Industry programs - Implemented maintenance management systems, logistics engineering, spares optimisation and plant availability optimisation. Interfaced with commercial, production and maintenance managers and unions on human factors, safety, and cost effective plant operation. Customers included Laminex Timber Mills (Ballarat, Wagga and Gympie), AMCOR, Aluminium Smelters in Portland, Invercargill and Bell Bay, and Australian Synchrotron. This work required Mr Hamilton to travel domestically and overseas, including living in Germany and Malaysia. He can speak both languages. Mr Hamilton completed a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering through RMIT and the University of Adelaide. He is currently the Combat System Logistics Engineering Lead for the Air Warfare Destroyer Project, working in Raytheon Australia. His next goals are to learn Italian language and qualify for Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng). |
