Biography | Born in Snow Hill, Greene County, North Carolina in 1936, Jasper grew up on a farm about three miles outside of Snow Hill. He graduated from the Greene County High School in 1955. During his high school days, he was active in various school activities such as debating club, crown and scepter club, drama club, newsletter committee and was on the football team. He also was the school's public address announcer. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and received the rank of Specialist 3rd Class. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. While serving in the Army, he married Barbara Ann and from this union there were two daughters, Audrey and Jacqueline and one granddaughter, Kelly. Barbara passed away in 1999. In 1958, he was employed as an insurance agent with North Carolina Mutual Insurance in Greenville, North Carolina. This was his first job. He worked for one year for this company. He faced the challenge of getting to know the do's and don'ts of people. After leaving the insurance company, he came to Washington, DC. In 1963, he was employed by the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland where he worked as an accounting technician and became involved in culture program planning and Toastmasters International and was an Equal Opportunity Counselor. He established a company recreational program in his division. This program enhanced the morale among employees of the division. While working at the National Institutes of Health, he went back to college completing an Associate's degree in Business Administration from Strayer University in 1973 and also studied at Shaw University and the University of the District of Columbia. He also furthered his education at Sojourner-Douglas College where he received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Magna Cum Laud. After retiring from the National Institutes, he went on to work for the State Attorney's Office in Prince George's County where he assisted the State's Attorney in establishing community outreach programs such as elementary and middle school children lectures on careers and crime. He also established a public speaking program called "Speaking to Excel" that taught teachers how to use creativity in teaching methods of subjects to children. After working for the State Attorney's Office, he went to work for Sojourner-Douglas College where he was appointed Director of Alumni Relations. After serving in this position for two years, he was appointed by the president of the college to assist in the opening of the Sojourner-Douglas College campus in Prince George's County, Maryland where he is presently the Enrollment Manager. His thesis for his Bachelor's degree was in Cybernetics Management, building a system within a system. He has established a system that connects well with the main campus. He inspires, encourages and motivates students in deciding their academic program objectives. He is currently the Treasurer of the College Alumni Association and has served in the same position in his community and homeowners association as a result of his knowledge of accounting and finance. His compassion for people has won him recognition from national and international organizations. He believes his divine connections have played a great part in his life that has kept him focused on not merely here but the hereafter as well. He believes that when one has a higher connection, it provides guidance and direction throughout one's life endeavors. He sums up his life as having been there for others and that has given him a peace of mind to rest assured that he has helped others along the way in this life. He feels blessed to be married to Marie and enjoys their daughters Michelle, Elaina and grandson Michael and other grandchildren whom have made his life complete. But most of all, to be able to devote his life to the lives of others. |
