Donald V. Steward, Ph.D. | |
Biography | Donald V. Steward was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1932. He has worked with problem solving and the development of unique problem solving techniques throughout his careers in nuclear engineering with General Electric, in computer systems with Burroughs Research Labs, in econometric modeling with the Social Systems Research Institute of the University of Wisconsin, in teaching business systems at Virginia Commonwealth University and in teaching software engineering at California State University, Sacramento. He has published two books (see published works) and is currently writing "Whatever Happened to Reality: Problem Solvers and their Adversaries." He developed the Dependency Structure Method that resulted in his invitation to MIT as a visiting scholar, its widespread use in engineering, and a series of continuing annual international workshops. He has recently developed the Examiner. The Examiner uses a computer program that allows people with various perspectives on complex problems to collaborate in order to gain a greater understanding of the problem, making solutions more likely to find. The Explainer has been used to gain insight into complex social problems such as the cause of the economic crisis and widening the wealth gap, how to decide when to lower the deficit, how terrorists could design plots to cause harm and how to prevent them, how to make medical diagnoses or failures in complex systems. It solves a very fundamental scientific problem, how to use cause and effect to explain observed behaviors or produce desired behaviors. |
