BiographyFor more than 30 years, Dr. Anthony J. Palumbo has been providing patients in Upstate New York with advanced eye treatment in a compassionate and caring manner. Older patients often describe their visual experience by Dr. Palumbo as le mani d'oro or simply, blessed hands capable of restoring the golden gift of sight. Throughout his career, Dr. Palumbo's leadership resonates at the frontier of the advances in Ophthalmology while embracing new technology as he continues to offer his patients safer and more effective treatments. In the mid-1990s, he became the first Ophthalmologist to perform ExcimerLaser Vision Surgery in Upstate, New York. Following graduation with a doctorate in Medicine and Surgery, cum laude, from the renowned University of Bologna, Italy, Dr. Palumbo completed his residency and fellowship at St. Mary's Hospital/Rochester Eye Institute in Rochester, New York. He became chief resident of ophthalmology during his last year in the program. Dr. Palumbo also completed an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship at the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital. At Park Ridge Hospital in Rochester, New York, he completed a fellowship in medical and surgical treatments of anterior segment diseases, including glaucoma surgery, cataract and lens implantation surgery, corneal surgery, and refractive surgery. From 1990 to 1991, Dr. Palumbo participated in a refractive surgery fellowship in London, England with Dr. John Marshall, considered by many research scientists as the Father of Excimer Laser Vision Surgery. Dr. Palumbo is a leader in his field and in his community. He has participated in numerous volunteer and charity programs, and he has also served as a mentor and teacher. He has received numerous awards in recognition of the exceptional patient care he has provided, as well as for his involvement in humanitarian efforts. Dr. Anthony J. Palumbo was the honored recipient of the Physician CARE Award in 2000, given by the Faxton Hospital - St. Luke's Health Care System for excellence in patient care and exceptional customer service. In 2001, he received the SCROLL Award from the Central New York Academy of Medicine, Inc., in recognition of his meritorious achievement in the advancement of scientific programs and humanitarian attainment. Dr. Palumbo was also chosen as the Humanitarian of the Year in 2003 at the American Diabetes Association Annual Charity Affair. The Mayor of the City of Utica honored him with a proclamation on October 17, 2003 for services and contributions to his community with Recognition of the Dr. Anthony J. Palumbo Day.
