Biography | Graduated high school in May, 1944, then enlisted on July 12, 1944 in the V-6 Combat Aircrewman program. Boot camp was at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. I then attended Aviation Ordnance A-School at Millington, Tennessee near Memphis. Followed by gunner school at Yellow water near Cecil Field, Florida then to NAS Banana River, Florida for radar bombardier training then operational training in the PBM Martin Mariner before being assigned to a VPB Squadron at NAS Alameda, California. The next assignment was to San Diego, California. All reserves were taken out of flight status when the war was over so I stood guard duty to complete my two years of active duty. I signed up for 4 years of inactive duty and after nearly 3 years of college, swapped the AOM/C-3 rating badge for a Cadet (NAVCAD) rating and went to Pensacola for pilot flight training. After a total of 31 years and flying 56 models of aircrafts, establishing a helicopter squadron, HC-7, September, 1967 as the first CO, putting a ship, USS New Orleans, in commission (October, 1968), as the Operations Officer then becoming (November 1970) qualifying as a fixed wing and jet pilot as well as a helicopter pilot. I was retired September 1, 1975. I have been a real estate broker, a goldminer, formed a nonprofit 501(C)(3), public benefit/charitable corporation in May 1997, with the mission to "Gather ,Preserve and Display the Legacy of Naval Helicopters Aviation and I am still pursuing that mission. |
