Career Accomplishments | In 2002 Panamco had approximately 43 large plants, 42,000 employees, 1,000,000 dealers in 7 countries and had become the largest bottling organization in Latin America. He is particularly proud of having built a giant Coca-Cola plant in Jundiai some 45 miles from San Paulo. This plant is so immense it can supply Coca-Cola to 30 million people. It has received the world's highest quality control awards. He and his associates took the family business public in 1993 and changed the name from Panamerican Investment Co., Inc. to Panamerican Beverages, Inc. (PB). The family business had gone from being unknown to being the world's third largest Coca-Cola bottling organization. In 1998 "Panamco" was named, for the third year in a row, one of the "100 Best Managed Companies in the World". Unfortunately, since then Panamco has suffered from the severe economic depression in Latin America. On April 28, 2003, Coco-Cola Femsa, of Monterrey, Mexico acquired Panamco for the sum of $U.S. 3.6. billion dollars |
Work History | Served in World War II from June 1942 to March 1946. Manufactured chemical munitions at Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Received Military Intelligence training at Camp Ritchie, Maryland. Joined the 77th Infantry Division on Leyte and then went through the campaigns on the islands of Kerama Retto, le Shima and Okinawa. On Okinawa he received a Bronze Star and promotion to Captain. When he arrived in Colombia in 1951 the family business consisted of 5 small plants in Colombia, 3 in Mexico and 2 in Brazil with about 600 employees. Most plants were marginally profitable because of low sales. He spent his entire business life in Latin America traveling constantly from plant to plant and country to country improving every single aspect of the business. He received help from a fine organization as well as The Coca-Cola Co. |
